Deborah
Friedes holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from The Ohio State University.
She trained intensively at the American Repertory Ballets Princeton Ballet
School before diving into modern dance at Brown and dabbling in Israeli folk dance
at New Yorks 92nd Street YM-YWHA. As a performer, Deborah has danced in
works by Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Merce Cunningham, Donald McKayle, Anna
Sokolow, David Parsons, and Carolyn Dorfman; as a director, she has reconstructed
works by Doris Humphrey and Helen Tamiris from Labanotation scores. Passionate
about dance scholarship and outreach, Deborah is a researcher for the American
Dance Legacy Institute (ADLI). She has performed and coached several of ADLIs
Repertory Etudes, and she arranged the Village Etude, based on Sophie Maslows
The Village I Knew (1950). Deborah has taught or conducted guest classes
at OSU, the New York State Summer School of the Arts, Ft. Hayes Metropolitan Education
Center, and the Arts Impact Middle School (AIMS). |

Class: Rainbow Etude (Level: Intermediate to Advanced) Brief Description: This class will concentrate on motivating movement from the narrative context of a dance. Our phrase material will be from Donald McKayle's emotionally powerful Rainbow Etude, based on his signature Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder (1959). Additional information/requests: The Rainbow Etude is part of the American Dance Legacy Institute's Repertory Etudes collection. This workshop is an excellent resource for Dance Education majors or those interested in community outreach through dance, since the Rainbow Etude and supplementary materials are frequently used in public school and community settings. Come to one class or to both! top Folk Dance Marathon (Israeli Folk Dance/Beginner and Up) Tuesday & Thursday |July 18 & 25 | 7 pm - 9 pm Brief Description: After learning simple folk dance vocabulary, we'll combine these rhythmic steps to do the "greatest hits" of Israeli circle dances. Work up a gentle sweat in a relaxed environment with a sense of community. No dance experience needed . . . bring your friends! Additional information/requests: Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing (no specific dance clothes needed). Jazz shoes, dance sneakers, or clean, dirt-free sneakers are suggested. top Repertory:Bushasche Etude (Level: Intermediate and Up) Wednesday | July 26 | 1:00-3:00pm Brief Description: Learn Pearl Primus's Bushasche Etude, based on a dance from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). Our movements will match the driving drum rhythms as we learn a dance traditionally performed to create peace for the next generation. Additional
